About Hawaii Forest & Trail – Hidden Craters Hike Kona
Go beyond public trails and step through three locked gates onto the upper slopes of Hualalai, Kona's quietly slumbering volcano. Guided across private land, you'll trace the footprints of 19th-century eruptions, walking past a 200-year-old lava flow, jagged spatter cones and fissures that crack deep into the earth.
The route winds through misty cloud forest before descending earthen steps—rope assist included—into a hidden lava tube, a subterranean passage once alive with molten rock. With only the sound of birds and your own footsteps, the hike delivers an intimate look at the raw, evolving landscape that shapes Hawaii Island.

- Travelers should have at least a moderate level of physical fitness
- Guests should be able to hike 3 to 4 miles on uneven or rocky terrain with up to 1,000′ elevation gain & descent.
- We require that guests wear closed-toe walking shoes or hiking boots. We recommend wearing shorts, short sleeved shirt, and bring a light sweatshirt or jacket
